History of Gilbert Engineering
Incorporated in January 1983, specifically to provide a very large capacity sub-contract precision surface grinding facility as a service to industry in South Wales and the West Country (possibly the largest in the area).
The Gilbert name has been synonymous with high quality general engineering in the area for over 50 years. However the assets and staff of Gilbert’s came as a result of the retirement of Hobrough Bros., another well-established and highly respected name in the field of machine tool engineering.
For nearly 30 years Gilbert Engineering continually expanded with the introduction of precision machining and tool making capabilities to compliment the already established precision grinding facility.
In June 2012 Gilbert Engineering was acquired by its current owners Nick and Colin who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience. Whilst precision grinding and tool making remains a very important aspect of the business the variety of services now offered has increased enormously. The platform provided by their predecessor John Gilbert was a fantastic springboard for growth.
Gilbert Engineering has now expanded greatly on what was already an impressively large customer base, now attracting precision engineering customers from throughout the UK and Ireland. The range of industries supported is very varied from Food, Energy, Steel, Automotive, Print and Leisure to sub-contact machining for many other Engineering companies. The focus of Gilbert Engineering is firmly on customer care, quality and service.
There has been a lot of investment in CNC machinery including Doosan VMC’s and turning centre, Correa 2.5m bed mill. We have also continued to invest in larger conventional turning along with fabrication and welding which have all played a part in opening the door to many new opportunities. 2017 sees the exciting introduction of a gear cutting facility at our new site in Oakdale, South Wales (formerly SZ Gears).
